They've almost always been out of most peoples budget when new. For what
the original owner shelled out for my 200TQA you could have walked out of
a Toyota dealer with 3 or more brand new cars at the time. My lowly 1984
5KS was in the neighborhood of $14k when new, big money in the day.
I'm very happy that there are others out there with the means to blow
$60k+ today (or soon) for my future car, by the time they find their way
to my driveway, most cost about 150% of what the original owner paid in
sales tax when new. Once sold out of warranty, these cars are not for
everyone in the used market, as with all Teutonic flagships, they're very
expensive to maintain if you don't do it yourself, and if you have the
kind of money where paying a shop is no biggie...they you'd quickly
rationalize yourself into a much newer car.
Problem with their popularity, from my point of view, is that they're not
depreciating fast enough! Buy a brand new A8, expect to take a $10K a
year hit on resale, not for the faint of wallet.
