Wrong assumption for Audis -- the thermostat is in the
BOTTOM hose on I5s. The top hose ALWAYS gets hot
because it's open to the engine.

The I5 cooling system works on the assumption that hot
coolant is always flowing into the radiator from the
upper hose. Coolant flow back INTO the engine, after
it's reached the right temperature is regulated by the
thermostat through the bottom hose.

It may well be that your radiator fan comes on
properly and cools the contents of the radiator. But
if the thermostat is stuck closed, you'll never get
that cool water back into the engine.

Spend the six bucks on a new thermostat, but remember
it's in the BOTTOM hose housing, not the top one. It
was easiest to get to mine by pulling the grille (four
metal clips) and going through from the front.
