Why not use a wax-based rust preventer such as Waxoyl or Tectyl? It's
generally used for box section cavities, but adheres to anything and if you
use a black variety it would cover the chromed finish quite well. BTDT on
numerous occasions. Oh, and the rust protection is an added bonus.
