Yes, that would require dropping the subframe, and you must support
the engine from the above so it doesn't droop. I have known people
who had successfully changed the starter on the 4 cylinder cars without
doing all that though. You need small hands and the right tools.

Yes, there is a front support bracket which should be removed.
