Jim and others,
I always paint all of the non-braking surfaces of new rotors before
installing -- that includes shooting lots of paint into the vents from the edge and
from the back side of the hats. Not only does it keep the rotors looking great,
but it prevents rust, thereby allowing the rotors to cool better.

Clean the rotors with lacquer thinner or acetone. Use high temp, high gloss
paint. Black is probably best; the high gloss provides a harder finish than
semi-gloss.

Don't be too fussy about getting paint on the edges of the swept areas near
the hat and at the outer edge. If you do, you'll get little bands of rust.
Same goes for the surface that mates with the wheel. If you live in an area
with real winters, you'll need to touch up every 1-2 springs.
