Well, I took the collective advice of the list.
First I re-adjusted the valves per John Larson's advice. I didn't do it
while the car was running like he suggested, but instead did it by removing
the cap and seeing when a piston would be firing - at this point, both
valves are closed and the cam is at the lowest point. Correct?
Anyway, with the car hot, intake at .008" and exhaust at .016", the car
immediately ran well enough to drive around the block. Up to 1/3 throttle,
the can ran smoothly, then felt like it was missing upon further throttle
application. At low rpms, it would still backfire through the carb and at
high rpms, the car felt like it was missing, but not backfiring.
Now, the improvement was significant significant enough that the car is at
least driveable. Of course, driving a car with no more than 1/3 throttle is
not pleasant for me.
I replaced the condesor as well and went to re-set the timing (since I had
to move the distributor to do the condesor) and then two things happened. I
ran out of daylight and also out of gas! Time to raid the lawnmower gas can
:)
I'll be working on it again on Friday. I'll keep you posted!
Richard
