dead tach

Hey guys,
   My tach has suddenly quit working. At first it just sat at the bottom, but
now it bounces between 2 and 3 grand. I'm thinking it's the connection at the
cluster. I've never had the instrument panel out, so I'd like to make sure
there are no other possibilities before I tear into the dash. The car runs
fine with the tach dead.
