pop! goes the steering rack, then the mess

Doesn't sound good, Wylie.
I've done this adjustment myself on Type 44s and C4s, but I always use a
road test to verify the setting. I turn the bolt in 1/8 of a turn and take
it for a drive. As the adjustment gets too tight, the steering will not
return to centre on it's own and it's time to back off the adjustment. A
clunk may be caused by something other than a loose preload, so if you are
adjusting by ear you can over tighten the preload. I wasn't aware that over
tightening the preload adjustment could crack the rack and cause a Pentosin
leak.
The Bentley repair manual has a procedure for this adjustment.
