Bridgestone Potenza FYI warning, and tire query

K guys, I think I've recovered from the shock enough to write this post. Just got back from Oklahoma for the summer, back to good ol' TN. Had to start my RA training (senior at Tennessee Tech this year, yeehaw!!!) on Wednesday, so I drove on up with all of my stuff in the car. It started raining when I got here, so the roads were slick, and I was obviously loaded with all my stuff. Took the last turn before the residence halls, and with the amount of speed that I had, the tires just skidded, right wheel towards the 6-8" high sidewalk. Hit hard, actually went up on the sidewalk. I did make it into my parking space, somehow (thank you, quattro). Bad news: lower control arm, probably subframe both bent. It is headed to the shop for what I'm sure are expensive repairs.
I wrote all that to say this: it wasn't the first time those tires have given out on me. They are stock spec, but the reccommended 38 psi isn't enough; upon inspection, they were underinflated. My dad told me that his Bridgestone Potenzas on his '87 5kcstq also had the same problem. Just a FYI warning for those who are running them. While it's in the shop, I'll be putting new tires on my 17" Fondmetals (they fit!) and probably replacing my TPS and cleaning my MAF (K&N air filter, doncha know).
So, to all V8q owners, what tire combo do you run on your 17s? I would like to stay with the 215 width, just to help cut through the rain, but I'm open to any size.
Joel
'90 V8q (going to shop; be better soon)
'86 5kcstq (seeing service with the Kumhos that stick like glue; I should know, I tried them out already; had to make sure) :)
