Hi,
I have been through the archives and the Bently and still am not
sure where the knock sensor is (I pulled a 2142 code after having
intermittent, 15 sec-long cranking followed by 250 rpm stumbling for another
10 sec). So perhaps this is due to full retard ignition.
In the figure on Bentley page 25.78, the knock sensor is drawn in
below cyl #3 as a rectangular elongated slab held onto the block by a
single, maybe 10 mm hex head bolt at one end of the slab and with a wire
extending out its other end toward back of car.
The only likely component I can find in that vecinnity of the
block (about 7" below the head gasket below cyl #3) is a cylindrical unit
about 2" long that looks somewhat like a spark plug (12-14 mm hex at its
base) with a cylindrical body sticking out about 1.5" from the base with A
single thick wire extending out of its outside end. The wire goes to the
bottom connector anchored on a bracket on the firewall that anchors two
other connectors. This bracket is on the passenger side of the coil
connector bracket.
Being a turbo, the whole area of the knock sensor is so cluttered
that it's difficult to even get a straight line of sight view of the
possible knock sensor. I'm reluctant to try an remove this round-bodied thing when
it might not be the knock sensor.
Questions:
1. Are there different versions of knock sensors explaining why mine
doesn's look like in the Bentley or as described in the archives
(Frank J. Bauer, 04 Apr 1996 00:22:12 EST)?
2. If not, how do I find my knock sensor? Perhaps if I could positively
identify which connector on the firewall is for the knock sensor I
could then follow the wire to the sensor.
3. What kind of a detector is used inside my knock sensor, a microphone,
an accelerometer actuated switch, or??
4. Can I test electrically to ensure the knock sensor is not shorted or
open circuit? Or can I look for a CRO waveform while tapping on the sensor
while its still in place?
Help with any of these questions will be greatly appreciated,
Lou
