I believe there's a temp sensor in there, and is mainly used by the
climate control head to figure out when to turn on the fan when the
car has just been started if the CC head is set for heat- no point in
running the fan when the heater core is still cold, I suppose.  Maybe
it also serves to help the engine warm up faster or something, since
it seems like a lot of 'effort' for that one feature...
