My old '89 200tq had a check engine light installed (not a California car)
but it was dangling behind the dash. The wires connecting the bulb were
not long enough to reach the spot where the bulb was supposed to be
mounted. Perhaps Fritz und Hans hat mit lunch zu viele bier or something
that day. Extending the wiring permitted placing the bulb where it
belonged. It would indeed light up when the ignition was turned on before
starting the engine. It also functioned correctly as the CEL and was able
to blink codes, etc., but it was useful only after the wires were extended
to put the bulb where it was visible.
