Hi all. i attended the 3rd rallyday held at castle combe racetrack in the UK
on Saturday. the journey there was quick as myself and a friend went in
seperate cars, me in my 90q and him in his Mitsi EVO 6 as we were both
attending in our own owners clubs. The pace was fairly rapid as we had left
a bit late, and there was a hold up on the M4. We passed a multitude of
interesting cars on the way, another EVO 6, which my friend new, a Lancia
Stratos and a Talbot/Lotus Sunbeam to name but a few.
As we got closer we formed up..... Evo 6/7 - Lotus Sunbeam - Evo 6 - 90q -
Urq which put a grin on my face, cool convoy.
Entering the event took minutes and was well organised, and i literally
entered the site and was in the paddock for the quattro owners club, at
which point there was around about 40 Audi's, all Urq's apart from an RS2, a
few S2's and my 90q.
Other cars there - Subaru's (it took me about 5 minutes to walk past all of
them), Mitsibishi Lancers, Vauxhall Chevette's, Toyota GT4's, Nissan Sunny
GTIR's, Ford RS's, Metro 6R4's and Lancia Stratos', these are just the major
atttenders which i can remember.
After i arrived i took a stroll around the paddock, took spescial interest
in the sport quattro with H.Mikkola on the side and the oil cooler mounted
in the spoiler as recently discussed on the list. Also saw Dave Preece's ex
works Ur but didn't have a chance to talk to him about it.
The track sessions were fairly mixed but everyone was driving hard, with
lots of sideways action at the corner where we were standing.
i returned later to the quattro owners club area to see the number of cars
had increased to something like 70. there was now an A8 V8, TT, RS4 and an
S4. Along with a Dialynx converted SWB quattro, which was real nice, the
first thing that gave it away was that the brakes did not seem big enough,
and the owner pointed out the windscreen angle to me which i'd overlooked.
The car was still really nice though.
Russ Swift (uk Stunt driver) did a show at lunchtime, donuts, hand brake
turns and driving on two wheels was on the menu there, very impressive.
Later on the quattro owners club did a parade lap or 2, unfortuantely i
headed back to my car too late. the circuit is around about 2 miles long,
and at no point was there more than 3 car lengths without an Audi on it....
what a sight.
There was a show of rally cars doing a short circuit, including 6r4's,
urq's, sport quattro, lotus sunbeam, escort rs2000, escort cossie, evo's,
subarus et al....... the sport was great... seemed gutless until the turbo
spooled up, then it flew..... the finale was the 840bhp rs200 driven by stig
bloqmist (forgotton the spelling), which was very rapid, as you'd expect.
in the qoc paddock there was a guy fixing up another owner's 100/200 who i
chatted to, didn't get his name, a lister perhaps???
anyway, i have loads of photos, but need some server space, if anyone wants
to host them, please email me direct.
A really good day out, will be getting tickets for next year without a
doubt.
