So what does the front engine mount do?

the front engine mount prevents the engine from torquing up at full song.
Newtons third 3rd law in action. The axles will turn counter clockwise, as the
engine rotates clockwise. I've seen 10V turbo engines with bad motor mounts and
missing rubber front mounts hit the hood and produce a rather nasty dent!

if your trans mounts are good, then there is less of a need for the front
mount. I've also seen racer types use a chain or strap to replace the front
mount.
