HELP!: pulling out the steering gear

So what's the trick to pulling out the steering gear. It looks like a real pain in the arse!! The engine is out so I thought this would be the time to do it. The problems I'm having are: (1.) How to drive the pinion shaft off the steering column? I removed the clamp bolt there, but I don't see the top of the pinion shaft where i could place a metal drift onto to drive it out. (2.) I have all the bolts on the rack removed, but there are several steel brake lines and one going to the brake servo that are in the way. There's not much room to maneuver on the other side either, so it feels like it's stuck. Any BTDT's would be much appreciated.
