Speedo problem

My very high mileage 86 4000 Quattro has developed an intermit speedometer.

First it stopped working. Sounds like the cable.

But then it starts working again!

Lately it won't work for the first 10 -20 minutes, then jumps up and starts
working perfectly.

Has anyone seen this problem?

I've never seen a cable do this (usually quits for good). Could it be the
speedometer itself?

Is there anything I can repair or is it best to swap it with one from a
junk yard. Does anyone rebuild these?
