My El Cheapo (Craftsman) beam torque wrench has a
plastic grip over the metal shaft. The grip moves around
a center pivot, like a see-saw (teeter-totter). The correct
procedure is to "float" the grip over the handle as you
apply pressure, like you are balancing a see-saw. If you
let the grip touch the shaft, you in effect shorten (or
lengthen) the distance from the nut/bolt at which the
torque is applied, thereby applying less (or more) than
the amount of torque indicated.
It's easier to use than explain.
