I just read in a car rag (think it was C&D) that one of the domestic truck manufactureers (Dodge?) is coming out with a Turbo I-5 of around 250 hp, so the I5 seems to be making a big comeback...

Would have to disagree with your interpretation here. The a 911 is a
911, whichever of the 25 or so forms it has come in over the years, up to
and including the 1994 Carrera's, RS's and Speedsters (gotta love those
cloth door pull handles.) There was a major reworking in 1989, but it
was still a 911. If major reworking defines the model, then the 911 had
passed long before the '80's, since the first major reworking was in
1974. My personal cutoff is 1994...but that's just me, Porsche
disagrees.

The 996, even in current Porsche literature is referred to as "911 996".
I have the factory accessory catalog for the '01 996, the only thing
printed on the cover is "equipment 911.)

Like just about every other manufacturer, they keep improving the model
and rarely screw around with a name that has the cache a 911, 500SL
(Mercyless Benz did move the letters around a while back) etc. has.
