I understand your need for an SUV...... However, if you "want the ability
to go whenever we want, regardless of weather", you better be very careful
in your selection vs. your expectations.  I must live in SUVland, because
it's getting so you hardly see even old beaters around here.  Even the
illegals (and there are a slew of 'em) drive old explorers and blazers.
Most of the ones I see aren't really suited or used for off roading and/or
in really inclement weather.  I felt a LOT more secure in the A6 in the mild
ice conditions at Sequoia last month than some of the SUVers looked.  There
were a lot of stories a couple of years ago on this very list about the
literally hundreds of stranded/disabled SUVs in the Chicago area after that
huge storm.  Good luck, and I hope you find what you need, John
