Something's Knocking in the clutch

Sorry to go off the torque topic guys, but believe it or not my Audi has
some other issues.  Am I the only person with something wrong on their cars?
The Audi Gods must be taking the week off.

Basically, I hear some sort of knocking at idle, when the clutch is not
engaged.  This scared the hell out of me because I first thought it was
severe engine knock.  When I press the clutch pedal, the noise goes away.
I have a feeling I am due for a clutch job, but there is no slip yet.  Is it
just a bad bearing?  Oh and when I shift gears under a lot of load, I get
some pretty mean rattle, but it sounds kind of cool.  I don't know if that¹s
coming from the clutch or if it is basic exhaust rattle.
