when did vw/Audi go to the "drive-by-wire" instead of thethrottlecable?

  Emissions was the main driver, but I'm sure that someone somewhere felt 
that it could be used to 'enhance' drivability.   I find it hard to get used 
to personally, and feel it to have hurt drivability.
