Well, I was using Mike's terminology, which is why I put disengaged in "..."

Guess I should have used the clutch pedal pressed/released to eliminate the
ambiguity.
Anyway, to rephrase: Worn throwout bearings typically 'complain'
when the clutch pedal is pressed (in), not when the clutch pedal is
released (out).
