Eric,
The name was given by Paul Timmerman, the (former?) list member who came up
with the idea. For rather obvious reasons as indicated by Brett there is a
chance that the engine and/or the turbo might become shrapnel should the
mod be used inappropriately.
I ran an '89 200tq with the shrapnel knob coupled with the resistor/zener
mod for better than 60K miles with no apparent ill effect (maximum of 18
psig of boost). I then, when I bought my urS6, sold it to another list
member who ran it for a lot more miles. At last report the car was still
in use and, apparently, running quite well. AFAIK, it still is. From this
one datum I would presume that the "knob's" hazards are not as great as
some would have one believe.
