what is a shrapnel knob?

"The name was given by Paul Timmerman, the (former?) list member who came up
with the idea."
Must been sometine in the 70s, because the term was used by crewmembers to
describe the adjustable boost knob in the 934/935 cars.  In fact, I vaguely
recall seeing pictures of knobs so-labeled.  John
