Clicking 4KQ Speedo, No heat in 5KQ

Just replaced the origional due to a dead odo, it worked fine for a week and 
now it is making a clicking noise in synch with speed(faster as the car goes 
faster).  Pushing the whole pod up or down will stop the noise.  Right now I am 
driving it with an eraser stuffed between the steering column and pod!  Is 
there some miracle solvent I can spray into the speedo unit to stop this or do I 
need to buy yet another one?
Next problem, the heater core on my 5KQ feels cool and delivers very little 
warmth even though the hoses in and out of it feel pretty warm.  My guess is a 
clogged heater core, has this happened to others?  It only has 300K miles on 
it!  It isn't the typical controller/flap motor problem, as I have disconnected 
everything and tie wrapped the system to give hot defrost only.  This car 
will be a donor for the 4KQ in the spring.
