In case anybody is curious about the 'knowledge boy', it's part of the
training to be a London cab driver.
The 'Knowledge of London' examinations were introduced in 1851 following the
Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, when complaints were made about drivers not
knowing where they were going.
Each would-be cab driver is given a copy of The Blue Book, which contains
400 standard routes ('runs') that must be learnt over a maximum period of 3
years. On some days it can be bloody difficult to cross a road in central
London without having to avoid knowledge boys zipping along the 'runs' on
mopeds.
They are subject to frequent interviews at the carriage office where
examiners (often rumored to be sadistic or deranged) test them on the
knowledge.
According to the Public Carriage Office:
"The unrivaled knowledge the London cabbie possesses provides the community,
resident, and tourist alike with the best road transport service in the
world."
Strange how they don't mention any training in how to be bloody rude and
awkward when a customer attempts to tender a 20 pound note for a 7 pound
fare.
