How important is that heat shield?

This may be a dumb question, but is that heat shield
down the center tunnel above the drive shaft all that
important?  Mines falling down and i just want to make
sure the car wont randomly explode from that not being
there.  Im tempted to throw it out after i rip it out,
but if the experts say i need it ill keep it and
re-attach it  when it gets warm out.
