TORQUE wrench findings

Fred: I'm missing something here:
How is it when you get your hands closer to the drive centre of the wrench 
you GAIN torque?
Wouldn't you lose Ft lbs?
Otherwise, why use a breaker bar to get a nut off, just grab the nut and 
twist Voila!?
