Dave,
Door panel removal does require the removal of a few screws. After you
remove all the screws, you then have to deal with the Christmas Tree
fastners. There are two screws in the bottom side of the arm rest that
will need to be removed, pull the remote mirror switch up and out of arm
rest and disconnect. Then rotate arm rest up toward the window and it
should pull out of door panel. Remove little cover over screw that holds
on the interior door handle pull. You will need to remove the screw
residing under there. You will need to remove the screw up at the power
mirror housing cover. You will also need to remove the power door lock
button. You will also need to remove all the screws at the bottom of the
map pocket (if you map pocket is still attached).
Once all the screws are removed then pry carefully at the edges of the
panel to dislodge the Christmas Tree fastners. And you should have the
door panel in your hands.
Good luck,
Ted

Ok, Thanks for the responses. I'll try shooting some lube in there this
evening when I get home. I leave late enough from the office, so nobody
should see me crawling through the other side to pop open the door from the
inside to get in.. :) If I do have to replace the handle, which I'm sure I
will, is the inner door panel just held on my those little plastic
fasteners
that I need to pry carefully to avoid breaking them? I guess it won't be
as
easy as swapping the handles on my '85 GTI which I was hoping it was.
