European cars have generally become heavier and heavier since the early 
80's. It generally has something to do with both growth in size and 
increase in passenger safety. The Euro NCAP stars have their role in the 
business.

Since Audis have *never* been very light in their class, this is more or 
less what you get. No wonder the engineers in Ingolstadt have been so 
hot about aluminum body panels :)
