Regarding mid-first generation A4's:
The break point I prefer is mid-year 1999 (aka 1999.5). These cars have the
upgraded interior (stereo, climate control, switches, dash), door handles
(easy giveaway that they are the later cars), and for just 1999.5 are the
last of the throttle cable cars. In my2000, they "upgraded" to the
drive-by-wire, which has some drawbacks (left foot braking for one).

I have ~50k on my 99.5 A4tqm Avant, and my wife and I are very satisfied
with the car. It has been to a couple of driver education events, but it's
real purpose is the rigors of everyday travel and some long distance trips.
It is quiet, smooth, and reliable (knock wood).
