Dave,
I broke off a couple of these on my GTI while trying to remove the
injectors and then just left them there. They seemed to burn away just
fine and I have had no problems since. I would be more worried if it were
a turbo engine. If you really want to get it out, you could turn the
engine til the intake valve opens and use one of those spark plug air dams
(used for changing valve seals) to send some compressed air out the intake
port.
