Though Mike A. did come across a little harsh (hell, guilty as charged many occasions), his point is well taken. A more balanced response would have been, yes, go for it, anything is possible, but don't underestimate the size of this project, almost everything in the car will have to be changed, so just thing through every change, plan it well, obviously more than a few coolant hoses will need to be changed, here are some modifications that will need to be considered:
-Engine harness wiring or aftermarket EFI?
-Engine mounts, cutting and welding mounts on frame rails (how the Jeff/2Bennett car was done)
-Brake master cylinder interference
-Exh routing, the headers interfere with the stock subframe
-Subframe clearance, the oil pan hits the subframe
-Cooling system mounting, Jeff used all the stock V8 cooling and AC sytem mounted up front, complete with stock oil cooler, stock hoses, etc.
-Transimission moutning, do you have the right block to mate to the 4kq tranny, what about the flywheel, do you even have one that will work?
This is just a start.
Jeff did spend almost a year building his V8, and that was with the help and access of a shop like 2Bennett, I don't think he spent $28k, that's likely what 2Bennett would want if you just dropped off a car and had them do the conversion.
I drove the car last week...I've always been skeptical of this swap, wondering if 240-260hp is really enough power to justify the work. Well, I don't want to offend Jeff, he did a great job, the swap is super clean, but I'm not sure if it was quite all worth it. The car was quick, tons of low down torque, instant power response from 1600rpm up. It has that "rare" appeal I suppose. But, it just wasn't that fast, feels like my 80tq with about 10 psi boost, nothing like the 20psi, vision blurring, stomach churning, chest caving acceleration of a well tuned, 034EFI'd 2.2 turbo 10v (basically 300whp or 350 crank). It felt like a 14.5 sec quarter mile car as opposed to a 13sec. car.
The sound of the V8 is amazing, and its so weird seeing it shake a 4kq, and the car was fun, but if its a fast car you want, I still believe the 2.2 turbo 10v is king for bang for the buck.
Now get a turbo on each side of that motor and now we're talking, 4-500hp EASY.
Anyway, have fun with it, that's what this is all about.
