It IS NOT a three position switch on 83's. Definitely 2 position. The
console panel looks the same as, or very similar to, the 84 3 position
switch, but there is no mid-position detent in the pull knob.

It's a three-position switch.  None, one and both.

Not in the MB manual.  By that time, competition was far in the ur-quattro's
past and it was
sold as an ultimate but restrained sports car.
