Dan,
    Oil pressure is also an indication.. but the bottom line?  You really 
can't.  Add a gauge is the answer I'm afraid.  See, most people don't know how to 
use an oil temperature gauge, so why should the manufacturer add content?  
(that was a rant.... all cars should have oil temperature gauges)
    It's easy to add in a gauge.  Single wire hookup, to a common dual-sender 
sensor for almost all vehicles.  Where to place the gauge, that can add up if 
you do something super custom.
    Listers who used to own VWs know this procedure at every startup.  5 
clicks of the MFA to bring up oil temp.  =)
