American cars have started using some metric fasteners even in the
1980s.  I had a college beater car, a POS Pontiac Sunbird that had a
mishmash mixture of SAE and metric stuff on it.  It was a royal pain to
work on because you never know whether you're really using the right
sized tool for any job, unless you have the service manual (and even
that is not helpful in many cases).
