metric tools - not so dumb question?

I believe a North American mile is the same as an English mile. I say 
this (as a Canadian) because our miles are the same as the American 
mile, but a Canadian (Imperial) gallon is 5/4 of an American gallon and 
the same as an English gallon.

All of the converting back and forth does make it confusing. I guess 
over there in England you are so happy that all of the measurements will 
be rationalized with the rest of Europe :^)
