windshields

Since moving to Boulder, about one car in 10 (higher among Audis) has
a cracked windshield.  So far my windshield is fine (just a little
pitted), but I'm not holding much hope, especially since it appears
that Audis are particularly vulnerable.  Is this true?  I don't
suppose those hood-mounted wind deflectors help against anything more
massive than insects?  Is there anything I should consider doing?

Just to be prepared, can someone give me an idea of what I should
expect to pay for replacement of the 1990 200 windshield?  There
aren't better aftermarket windshields, are there?
