Hi Y'all,

I take back all the bad things I said about my local (65 miles one way)
Audi dealer!!! I may even stop calling them "my local stealer". Well,
I'll not take back everything but they now have a new service manager since
way back when I went several rounds with them over problems with an earlier
(3 cars back) '89 200q.

Their diagnosis was not the shift linkage as I thought but was a problem
with the clutch itself not fully releasing. I told them to go ahead and
fix it but I wanted to see the parts.

The bad news:

I just got a call from the service manager. The pressure plate had split
in half. The flywheel is damaged and needs to be replaced. Parts plus
labor will be a BUNCH! The parts cost, flywheel plus clutch kit, totals
over $1,300.

The good news:

He called Audi and told them that in "all his years with Audis neither he
nor any of his techs had ever seen anything like this failure mode. This
should not have happened. Furthermore, a new clutch was installed about 18
months ago." He repeated, this should not have happened. The upshot is
that the Audi field rep agreed with him and Audi will pay for the parts. I
will be stuck paying for the labor but I don't think I'll do too much
complaining about that.

Thank you, Herr Piech.

Can someone explain - just how did our oil get under Iraq's sand in the
first place? Note: this is not a question about geology.
