anyone know details of MC 1 knock sensor operation?

Hi Stephane,
It sounds like you're having the same problem as I have been having, but
have now sorted. I thought my knock sensor on my 1B (UK spec) engine was
faulty in that it seemed to be over sensitive. It turned out that it was
just screwed in too tightly. Once adjusted (with some cardboard washers,
actually) it ran tonnes better.
The symptoms were that the car would lose power when any significant amount
of accelerator was applied. It would not accelerate beyond a certain point,
stall when idling and then not start for a few minutes of turning it over
afterwards. The knock sensor was incorrectly retarding the ignition which
was causing all these problems. The engine check light would not light (and
the ECU would not record a fault) because it thought this was normal
behaviour. It didn't know that there was in fact no engine knocking.
To test my theory, I made sure that I never let the revs go beyond 3000rpm
at the same time as having the boost at 0.7 or higher. Within these
restrictions, I could drive however I liked and the engine ran perfectly.
You can also try disconnecting the knock sensor completely and driving like
that for a while. The check light will come on and the ECU will reduce the
ignition timing to protect the engine, but it will return to normal
behaviour once idling again.
Check out http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/10vknock.html for some decent
advice.
Cheers, Mike.

here's the prob.
blah blah
If it was the knock sensor cutting out the fuel, wouldn't I get the check
engine light and a code stored?
blah blah
TIA
Stephane
