Hmm, you might be right.  Years of "CIS conditioning" had me thinking
otherwise.  The new Motronic ECUs are indeed very smart.  If it's capable
of detecting a failed coil (which apparently it does, because it will
trigger the auto-check warning and an appropriate DTC), it could simply
stop injecting fuel in that cylinder.

So in the event of a coil failure, maybe the driver will indeed simply
notice rougher running and reduced power, but otherwise no additional
harm done.
