You might try the oil cooler. I had one go bad on a 4K and I had the same
symptoms you describe. I went to a wrecking yard and got a replacement.

Ia quick recap, aquired an 89 80, its water system was pumping up and
overflowing. There was oil in water, and water in oil. I assumed it was
the head gasket, so the car has been stripped, gasket replaced, rebuilt
retimed, runs absolutely beautifully.
\problem, when the car gets up to temperature... the radiator top hose is
hot, the lower 2 (one to water pump, one to expansion tank) are stone cold..
Also when the engine is stopped, and I remove the expansion tank cap the
water starts to surge up and down dramatically. There also appears to be a
minute amount of fresh oil in the water, although this could be left in the
system from before.
It does not appear to be losing water, it is hard to tell if it has lost any
oil. Oil still needs to be drained and refilled, so there is still some
water/oil emulsion left.
So any ideas, I have my own, but I am completely unsure.

Alan Pritchard
