Sounds like your not pumping water. It could be 'cause the block is not
full. I had nearly identical symptoms after a TB/WP job on my 82 CGT.
Disconnect the T-stat gooseneck, drill a 1/8" hole in the plate of the
T-stat. Re-install the T-stat (preferably with the hole up). Reassemble and
fill. The hole allows the air escape so coolant can displace it.
