good point.

I usually use light solvent (brake cleaner, etc.) and a pick before
pulling the plug, to loosen any grime, and then blow it clean with
compressed air.

Then I scrape the seat clean with another sharp, flat tool with the plug
out and just try to be careful most of it stays out of the engine.
Usually no sand by this point anyway, just trying to get a good seal and
a nice clean head.
