Salvage Title

Hi All,
In regard to Greg's question about the advisability of buying a
salvage title Audi V8, my experience with a salvage title 1999 Passat with
28000 miles has been very positive. Fortunately, I was able to see
photographs before the Passat was repaired which showed that the collision
damage was not very severe.  The main issue is how much of a reduction in
market value (assuming the necessary repairs are properly done) will the
salvage title cause.  My rule of thumb is at a minimum 25% to a maximum of
40% (My Passat was at least 40% perhaps even more).  Also, in my home state
of Michigan the determination of salvage/scrap title status is truly
capricious.  I have written to the Secretary of State to complain of some
late model BMWs that been smashed beyond recognition that were still issued
clear titles due to the greed factor of some insurance adjusters. Older Audis
get salvage titles with very minor damage due to the wide variety of
insurance company policies and practices.
