You're almost there. Put the spacer between the caliper carrier and strut
housing. That's what I did and it works fine.
I also had to remove about 0.030" from the outside trailing edge of my new
TRW ball joints with a die grinder because they would rub against the rotor
when in a full lock turn. The left joint rubs on the backside of the joint
when the wheel is full left, and vice versa for right. That's because the
ball isn't centered with respect to the part that goes into the control arm.
You'll see what I mean when you put it all together. Non-TRW joints seem
to be slightly smaller in diameter in the outer casting and don't seem to
require the shaving.
