Hi Dobby,
No you can't drive it like that. You can if you can manually lock the center
diff though. It's worth fixing that BTW. The vacuum diff lock actuators
aren't that expensive if that's what's broken. It may just be a vacuum leak
in the lines, or a stiff/seized mechanical part of the actuator which you
might be able to free up with a bit of work. Also, how long to you wait
before you give up on the center diff lock? My back one comes on really
quick (like a couple of seconds) but the center one takes longer, like 30
seconds sometimes. The back one is new. That's probably why.
But, in any case, I suggest you go to a driveshaft shop and get another
opinion before you start buying stuff and shipping it all over the place. I
wouldn't trust a word that the monkey boys at the previous shop said.
Driveshaft shops are used to this stuff. Quattros aren't the only cars with
center support bearings.
Most important, GET YOUR CAR OUT OF THAT SHOP AND DON'T LET THEM DO ANOTHER
THING TO IT, NOT EVEN "PUT IT BACK TOGETHER."
Cheers,
