'89 90 diff/tranny question. Part II

Hi again and thank you for the responses of my post last week.
I am still talking to the guy w/ the '88 90, 3-speed auto w/ bad diff. He told me he got an estimate for a new diff/tranny for 1500.00.
He is asking high blue book for the car, I offered him 1500.00 less, he said no, and that I could use a used diff from a salvage yard from many VW models. Is that true?
Just for back ground. I live on Kaua'i, pop 50k and approx 10 Audis, and only three or four qualified mechanics.
