Isn't there a collar or something that needs to slip down over the shaft?

It's been a year since I was in there, but I seem to remember a part that
fit over "step" at the end of the threads.  If that peice was sitting on
top of the step instead, the nut wouldn't tighten down right.

The shaft of the strut should be held vertically tight, else it doesn't
dampen any vibrations.

(Right?)
