I only know what you've told me, I've never seen your car, I can only speak in general terms... and, I've assumed (maybe wrongly...) you have installed everything correctly.  Its not as simple as "removing a strut bearing will ruin it", a strut bearing can fail and still be held together reasoably well before removal, etc.

Your statement that the strut moves up and down independent of the strut bearing would indicate that there is a problem with the slotted nut collar or the top nut...

Robert, I suggest you go back and check the integrity of your installation and confirm it before speculating any more.
